Sutherland House is a current hub of excitement for students of Royal Holloway who have access to an exclusive event taking place on Wednesday 9th November. It was announced on Friday (4th November) that comedian Omid Djalili is to visit the university’s famous drama department for a question and answer session with 150 students.
Many know Omid as one of Britain’s most acclaimed stand-up comedians, whilst others have watched him in blockbuster films such as The Mummy (1999) and Gladiator (2000). His current ‘Tour of Duty’ covers 58 locations throughout the UK, including Reading on 8th November, Oxford on 9th November, and London’s Hammersmith Apollo on 24th and 25th February 2012.
Head of the Department of Drama and Theatre, Gilli Bush-Bailey, has commended the entrepreneurial flair shown by students, stating: “Our students continue to build on their past record in making contacts in the industry and we are very proud that through their energy and commitment events such as this can happen. The whole department is delighted to welcome Omid Djalili and we are looking forward to hearing about his hugely successful career as an actor and comedian.” This rare and exciting event was made possible by the diligence of Grace Holliday, Social Secretary of The Student Workshop. Holliday has worked with Djalili’s current tour manager, Andrew Jobbins, and it was upon her suggestion that the comedian has agreed to visit the iconic department during his current tour.
The Student Workshop is a student-run society attached to the Department of Drama and Theatre and this event, part of the In The Spotlight series, is just one of many organised by the society. Information about other events in the series can be found at http://www.thestudentworkshop.com.
In The Spotlight with Omid Djalili will take place on Wednesday 9th November at 1-2.30 pm in the Studio Theatre of Sutherland House, RHUL. Tickets will be on sale in the Green Room in Sutherland House on Monday 7th November from 1.15pm for drama students (£3) and from 1.45pm for all students (£4). There are 150 places available and tickets will likely sell quickly for this event that promises to be highly entertaining and truly inspiring. Not to be missed by students working towards a career in comedy, acting, broadcasting or performing arts in general.
